A portrait session is just as much an exercise in asking questions and listening carefully to the answers as it is about clicking the shutter button on the camera. Or at least it should be so. The best portraits capture the person; they convey more than just a smile for the camera.
Great portraits speak; they talk to the person viewing them, explaining who the person is and what that person is all about.
Portaiture should never be a cookie-cutter process where the photographer places person X in pose Y, throws a million lights up in predetermined places, clicks the shutter button and moves on to the next client. Portraiture needs to be more than that.
